Lagoa da Vela ao anoitecer, em Dezembro de 2006!

Deixo aqui um conjunto de fotografias que tirei na Lagoa da Vela em Dezembro de 2006, ao anoitecer. Apesar de serem das primeiras fotografias realizadas por mim, há quase 3 anos atrás, só muito recentemente é que as tenho vindo a seleccionar e editar.

A Lagoa da Vela é uma lagoa de água doce, situada na freguesia do Bom Sucesso, pertencente ao concelho da Figueira da Foz e ao distrito de Coimbra. Com uma área de cerca de 65-70 hectares (161-173 acres), é a maior lagoa natural da sub-região da Gândara. Esta lagoa, localizada a cerca de 7 km a Este do Oceano Atlântico, tem aproximadamente a forma de um longo e estreito rectângulo com orientação Norte-Sul e está rodeada por pinhais (ao Norte, Sul e Oeste) e por terras agrícolas (a Oeste). 

O nome da lagoa é um mistério, perdido no tempo. Algumas pessoas dão a explicação de que, há alguns séculos atrás, a lagoa estava ainda ligada ao mar por algum tipo de canal natural, o que permitia que os veleiros (barcos à vela), navegassem até à lagoa. Na realidade, a Geologia diz que há cerca de dois ou três milénios atrás, a lagoa fazia parte do mar, tendo depois começado um lento e contínuo processo de separação, com a formação de um cordão litoral separador devido à acumulação de areias, o qual foi ganhando consistência e formando dunas.

Today i present a set of photos that i took in Lagoa da Vela, at sunset and dusk, in December of 2006. Just very recently i started to make a seleccion and edition, of the pictures that i took in the last three years. And i still have some thousands, to select and edit.

The Lagoon of Vela is a fresh water lake, located in the “freguesia” (civil parish) of Bom Sucesso, belonging to the municipality of Figueira da Foz and to the district of Coimbra. With an area of roughly 65 to 70 hectares (161 to 173 acres), is the the biggest natural lagoon of the sub-region of Gândara. This lagoon, located approximatelly 7 km to East from the Atlantic Ocean (4,35 miles), have roughly the shape of a long and narrow rectangle, with direction north-south,  and is surrounded by pine forests (in the North, South and West) and agricultural lands (in East).

The word “Vela” has two different meanings in the Portuguese: sail or candle. But the name of the lagoon is a mystery, lost in time. Some people give an explanation that, some centuries ago, the lagoon was still connected to the sea by some kind of natural channel, what would have allowed the sailboats to navigate, reaching the lagoon from the sea. In reality, the Geology says that some two or three millenniums ago, this lagoon was part of sea. But became separated from the Atlantic Ocean, through the centuries, because of the slow accumulation of sands and formation of dunes.

Insecto Bioluminescente no Quintal!

Numa noite de Julho de 2009, ao circular no quintal da casa, fui atraído por uma pequena luz no solo. Reparei que era um exemplar de um insecto de uma espécie que desconheço, e que apenas avistei umas 3 ou 4 vezes na minha vida. Desta vez corri a casa para ir buscar a máquina fotográfica. Era um daqueles insectos que emitem luz (animais bioluminescentes), conhecidos por nomes como pirilampos, vaga-lumes, etc... Apesar de ter procurado pela Internet, não consegui descobrir a que espécie pertencia esse insecto. Por isso, se alguém souber de que espécie se trata, agradeço que deixe aqui a informação nos comentários.

Aqui ficam algumas imagens, editadas a partir de 3 fotografias originais. A formiga preta que aparece na fotografia com flash ajuda a definir as dimensões do insecto, uma vez que tais formigas costumam medir uns 7-10 milímetros.

I found one bioluminescent insect in my backyard!

In one night on July of 2009, i noticed a tiny light on the ground of my backyard. After going investigate it, i realized that light has been emitted by one bioluminescent insect; a kind of specie that i just saw 3 or 4 times during my life. But this time, i ran home to pick my camera.

Bellow you will find seven images of this insect, all edited from my three original photographies. If you know the scientific name of this insect specie, please tell me in the comments space. I searched in the internet, but i didn't found. To help measure the size of the insect; in the 5 th and 6 th photos, there is an ant from a specie with a lenght around 7-10 milimeters.

Luzes, Água e Escuridão - Barrinha de Mira

Deixo aqui um conjunto de várias fotografia tiradas algures em 2007, na Barrinha de Mira, ao anoitecer e de noite. Estas fotografias foram incluídas no Vídeo de divulgação da Barrinha de Mira, que é apresentado numa das mensagens anteriores.

I let here a set of photos that i took, in two or three different days of 2007, in Barrinha de Mira. The common feature of these photos, is that all of them have been taken at dusk or at night. All these photos were also included in the video about the Barrinha de Mira, that i put in a earlier post.

Lagoa dos Teixoeiros - Brincadeiras Digitais

Hoje apresento aqui em cima, uma fotografia original (sem retoques ou edição digital), tirada na Lagoa dos Teixoeiros (ou Lagoa da Mata), no fim da tarde de um dia de Setembro de 2009. Esta lagoa localiza-se na Freguesia da Tocha e Concelho de Cantanhede. Posteriormente irei colocar no blog mais informações acerca desta lagoa.

Utilizando como ponto de partida esta fotografia original, fiz-lhe várias edições e manipulações digitais, utilizando o Photoscape, um software freeware de edição de imagem. Quem gostar de fotografia, que aproveite, pois o Photoscape é de borla e muito útil. Apresento em baixo algumas das imagens resultantes:

Above is a photo that i took in the end of an afternoon of September 2009, in Lagoa dos Teixoeiros, aka Lagoa da Mata; which is a small  natural fresh water lagoon, located in the civil parish of Tocha, belonging to the municipality of Cantanhede and district of Coimbra. In the future i will post here more complete informations about this lagoon.

Starting with the above photography, i made some editions and manipulations, just for experimentation and fun! I used the image editing software Photoscape. This software is freeware and very useful, so i recomend it for people who like amateur photography, just like me. See below the resulting photos:

Nota: Penso que estas imagens de satélite terão sido fotografadas no Verão de 2005, ano seco e quente em que Portugal passou por um grave período de seca. Nesse ano a Lagoa dos Teixoeiros secou quase por completo, tendo sido escavado um fosso artificial na sua parte nordeste, para possibilitar a sobrevivência de parte dos peixes.

Note: I think, without 100% sure, that these satelite images, were taken during the summer of 2005. During this hot and dry year, a severe drought occurred in Portugal, during wich the Lagoon dried almost completly. An  artificial deep ditch was excavated in the northeast corner of the lagoon, to save a part of the fishes.

Casas Gandaresas e Santos da Igreja Católica - Arrancada, Febres

Num dia de meados de Junho de 2009, ao fim da tarde, desloquei-me às localidades de Arrancada, Lagoas e Pedreira (Freguesia de Febres, Concelho de Cantanhede), para fotografar o que resta das quatro lagoas naturais ainda existentes nestas povoações. Quando caminhava a pé pela rua principal da povoação denominada Arrancada, não resisti a tirar algumas fotografias às velhas casas gandaresas aí existentes, algumas das quais ostentam marcas de estarem desabitadas e a entrar em ruína.

Escolhi para publicar aqui as fotografias de três casas, que têm em comum o facto de apresentarem na sua fachada frontal, pequenos painéis de azulejos onde são representados vários Santos da Igreja Católica:

Old traditional houses from Gândara and Catholic tile decorations, in Arrancada (Febres - Cantanhede):

Today i decided to publish here some photos that i took in the end of afternoon in a day of June 2009 (almost in dusk), of three old traditional houses (kind of old houses, typical of the sub-region of Gândara (in portuguese,"Casas Gandaresas")), located in the main street of the village of Arrancada (parish of Febres, municipality of Cantanhede, district of Coimbra). These three houses (one uninhabited and with symptons of ruin), have in common the fact that they all have a small tile panel (in portuguese, "painel de azulejos"), above their entrance door, which presents one image of Saints of the Catholic Church.

Note: First Names as Mary ("Maria") and Joseph ("José"), are very ordinary among the people of Portugal. Combinations like Mary Joseph ("Maria José") or Joseph Mary ("José Maria"), are also very used in names. "Jesus" is also very common, but as family name, not as first name. And "Vivenda" is an exquisite portuguese word, who means an good house (something like a small mansion). "De" means "of".

All this to explain to the visitor, that in this case, there are strong possibilities that this tile panel image, have a relation with the full name of the house owner.

Eles andam aí e nós quase já nem reparamos neles!

Hoje publico aqui umas fotos que tirei numa oliveira do quintal lá de casa, em Dezembro de 2006, de um animal muito comum na Gândara. De tão comum que ele é, que muitas vezes está perto ou passa ao pé de nós e quase já nem reparamos nele! É popularmente conhecido por designações como Sardanisca, Sardaneta ou Lagartixa; embora para os eruditos das ciências seja designado por Lagartixa-Ibérica (Podarcis Hispanica). Quando os virem, deixem-nos vivos e em paz, e terão a recompensa futura de serem menos importunados por moscas e mosquitos.

Today i choose to publish here, some photos i took in December of 2006, in a olive tree from my backyard. These photos are from an animal very commom in the Gandara, whose scientific name is Iberian Wall Lizard (Podarcis Hispanica). But here, people usually know this specie by designations like "Sardanisca", "Sardaneta" or "Lagartixa". These small animals are seen very often in walls or stones exposed to the sun, or moving very quickly in the ground. If you ever travel to Portugal, please let these harmless animals alive and in peace, and as reward, you will be less annoyed by flies or mosquitoes.

Barrinha de Mira!

Alguns vídeos de divulgação da Barrinha de Mira, feitos por mim há alguns meses atrás, utilizando fotografias e vídeos captados por mim em 2007 e 2009.

A Barrinha de Mira é uma lagoa costeira portuguesa, localizada na Praia da Mira, a cerca de 250 metros de distância do Oceano Atlântico. Apesar de se localizar muito próxima do mar, a Barrinha de Mira é uma lagoa de água doce, continuamente alimentada por algumas pequenas ribeiras.

Esta lagoa costeira é o que resta de um lento processo natural milenar de acumulação e formação de bancos de areia, que levou à sua separação do mar, seguido de um outro processo natural de contínuo e lento assoreamento. Nos últimos dois séculos, verificou-se um intenso processo contínuo de aterro e recuperação de terras pelo homem, para obter terrenos para habitação ou agricultura; que só terá parado há uns 10/20 anos atrás (???)  e que diminuiu de forma considerável a área ocupada pela Barrinha de Mira.

The Barrinha de Mira is a portuguese coastal lagoon, located in Praia da Mira (Mira Beach), some 250 meters away from the Atlantic Ocean. Altough very near the sea, the Barrinha de Mira is a fresh water lagoon, fed continuously by some small streams.

The current area of the lagoon is what remains of a natural process of centuries of slow aggradation. This process was accelerated in the last two centuries, by an intense land reclamation by man, to get and convert land for habitation or agriculture. Also, some transportation and leisure infrastructures were made.
