Poços, poços e mais poços!

Entre a Lagoa da Vela e a aldeia do Bom Sucesso (Sede da Freguesia com o mesmo nome, no Concelho da Figueira da Foz), existe uma vasta extensão de terrenos agrícolas onde se localiza uma das maiores concentrações de poços agrícolas da Gândara. Estes poços servem terrenos agrícolas que na sua maior parte se caracterizam por serem estreitos (de reduzida largura) e compridos, reflexo da forma como os outrora pequenos terrenos familiares foram conquistados lentamente à Lagoa da Vela, durante os últimos 2 ou 3 séculos.

As fotografias que publico foram tiradas durante uma caminhada matinal em Novembro de 2013. Voltei a passar por esta área em Julho de 2014 e pude voltar a verificar que a maior parte destes campos agrícolas ainda estão em uso (em Julho o cultura do milho ocupa a maior parte deles), sendo raros os que se apresentam abandonados ou reflorestados com espécies de árvores para produção de madeiras industriais, como pinheiros ou eucaliptos; situação que contrasta com algumas outras zonas da Gândara, onde o abandono é a regra e não a excepção.

Esta intensa actividade agrícola também tem o seu reverso da medalha, pois a utilização de fertilizantes e pesticidas acaba por ter efeitos negativos na vizinha Lagoa da Vela.

Notei que a maioria dos poços da zona são servidos por infraestruturas comuns de distribuição de electricidade, para fazer funcionar os seus motores eléctricos de rega. O que também parece contrastar com outras áreas agrícolas da Gândara, onde cada um se desenrasca como pode. 
Terá havido cooperação e planeamento comum entre agricultores para as financiar e construir? Terá havido algum programa específico de apoio por parte das autarquias locais, Junta ou Câmara, ou do Governo Central? Terá sido um acaso? Não sei!

Wells, wells and more wells!

There is a big area of agricultural fields between the Lagoa da Vela (the biggest of the fresh water lakes of the region), and the village of Bom Sucesso (the name of the village can be translated to "Good Success"), both located in the Civil Parish of Bom Sucesso and Municipality of Figueira da Foz.
(Ok, this area is big for the standards of this sub-region, but small in comparison with the huge agricultural areas of the world, as the huge areas in the american Midwest, or even the big areas of other Portuguese agricultural regions, as the Ribatejo and Alentejo!)

Most fields in this area, with many different owners, are long, but very narrow, because of the way they were slowly reclaimed from the nearby lake, during the last 2 or 3 centuries. Unlike other agricultural areas of the region, where most fields are abandoned or reforested with pines or eucalyptus, in this area most fields are still in use. In the Spring and Summer, they are full of corn crops.

Of course that the use of fertilisers and pesticides have some negative consequences in the nearby lake.

Every field has one irrigation well to supply water, by pumps with electrical or combustion engines. And this area has one of the biggest concentration of wells of the sub-region of Gândara. I present a few photos of these wells, taken during an hike in November of 2013.

NAO HENTUHO? Uma cruz pela Lagoa da Vela?

Há alguns meses atrás, durante uma caminhada matinal que efectuei em Novembro de 2013, dei com esta cruz de madeira original, colocada por mãos anónimas em cima de um monte de entulhos agrícolas despejados na margem Sudeste da Lagoa da Vela! (Será esse local da lagoa conhecido por Canto dos Carvalhos?)  

Sim, em pleno século XXI, ainda há algumas pessoas que vão despejar entulhos agrícolas nas Lagoas da Gândara, infelizmente! E até entulhos da construção civil já vi (e fotografei)!

NAO HENTUHO?

During a morning hike in November of 2013, i saw a wooden cross, placed by anonymous hands above a pile of agricultural waste, illegally dumped in the South area of Lagoa da Vela. (This "lagoon" is the biggest fresh water lake of the region. There are lots of pictures and informations about the Lagoa da Vela, a beautiful ecosystem, in other posts of this blog.)

The words written in the cross, "NAO HENTUHO", have misspellings. Perhaps the anonymous person wanted to write "NÃO ENTULHE" ("Do not dump agricultural waste here")?

Excesso de caça nas Lagoas?

Uma fotografia tirada em Julho de 2009, na margem nascente da Lagoa da Vela. Esta quantidade excessiva de cartuchos usados, num simples metro quadrado de solo, não indiciava nada de bom, pois não? E outros não estariam visíveis, uma vez que se encontrariam enterrados. Saliento que não houve qualquer tipo de manipulação de cartuchos para tirar esta foto, simplesmente fotografei o que vi, quando passei naquele local.

Overhunting?

A photography taken in July of 2009, on the east bank of Lagoa da Vela (a big fresh water lake, of natural origin, located in the Civil Parish of Bom Sucesso and Municipality of Figueira da Foz). This excessive amount of used shotgun shells, in a single square meter of terrain, is an evidence of something bad, no? And perhaps there were some more shotshells, not visible, since they were buried.

Vídeo sobre a Lagoa da Vela!

Terminei há umas duas semanas atrás o meu vídeo pessoal de divulgação nacional e internacional da Lagoa da Vela. Neste vídeo, inseri diversas fotografias e vídeos que fui recolhendo, entre Dezembro de 2006 e o Dia de Ano Novo de 2010. No futuro, penso fazer um vídeo de divulgação para todas as principais Lagoas da Gândara. Após os vídeos sobre a Barrinha de Mira e a Lagoa da Vela, seguir-se-á um vídeo sobre a Lagoa dos Teixoeiros / Lagoa da Mata.

Vídeo about the Lagoa da Vela!

Today i put here a personal video about Lagoa da Vela, that i had uploaded to YouTube two weeks ago. In this video, i inserted some videos and photos that i took between December of 2006 and the New Year Day of 2010. In the future, i will try to create other videos about the other Lagoons of Gândara.

Lagoa da Vela ao anoitecer, em Dezembro de 2006!

Deixo aqui um conjunto de fotografias que tirei na Lagoa da Vela em Dezembro de 2006, ao anoitecer. Apesar de serem das primeiras fotografias realizadas por mim, há quase 3 anos atrás, só muito recentemente é que as tenho vindo a seleccionar e editar.

A Lagoa da Vela é uma lagoa de água doce, situada na freguesia do Bom Sucesso, pertencente ao concelho da Figueira da Foz e ao distrito de Coimbra. Com uma área de cerca de 65-70 hectares (161-173 acres), é a maior lagoa natural da sub-região da Gândara. Esta lagoa, localizada a cerca de 7 km a Este do Oceano Atlântico, tem aproximadamente a forma de um longo e estreito rectângulo com orientação Norte-Sul e está rodeada por pinhais (ao Norte, Sul e Oeste) e por terras agrícolas (a Oeste). 

O nome da lagoa é um mistério, perdido no tempo. Algumas pessoas dão a explicação de que, há alguns séculos atrás, a lagoa estava ainda ligada ao mar por algum tipo de canal natural, o que permitia que os veleiros (barcos à vela), navegassem até à lagoa. Na realidade, a Geologia diz que há cerca de dois ou três milénios atrás, a lagoa fazia parte do mar, tendo depois começado um lento e contínuo processo de separação, com a formação de um cordão litoral separador devido à acumulação de areias, o qual foi ganhando consistência e formando dunas.

Today i present a set of photos that i took in Lagoa da Vela, at sunset and dusk, in December of 2006. Just very recently i started to make a seleccion and edition, of the pictures that i took in the last three years. And i still have some thousands, to select and edit.

The Lagoon of Vela is a fresh water lake, located in the “freguesia” (civil parish) of Bom Sucesso, belonging to the municipality of Figueira da Foz and to the district of Coimbra. With an area of roughly 65 to 70 hectares (161 to 173 acres), is the the biggest natural lagoon of the sub-region of Gândara. This lagoon, located approximatelly 7 km to East from the Atlantic Ocean (4,35 miles), have roughly the shape of a long and narrow rectangle, with direction north-south,  and is surrounded by pine forests (in the North, South and West) and agricultural lands (in East).

The word “Vela” has two different meanings in the Portuguese: sail or candle. But the name of the lagoon is a mystery, lost in time. Some people give an explanation that, some centuries ago, the lagoon was still connected to the sea by some kind of natural channel, what would have allowed the sailboats to navigate, reaching the lagoon from the sea. In reality, the Geology says that some two or three millenniums ago, this lagoon was part of sea. But became separated from the Atlantic Ocean, through the centuries, because of the slow accumulation of sands and formation of dunes.
