Há exactamente uma semana atrás, aproximadamente à mesma hora a que estou a escrever este post, a Região da Gândara estava a enfrentar aquela que foi provavelmente o pior tempestade da sua história recente, com ventos invulgarmente fortes. Devido aos estragos provocados por esta tempestade, muitos milhares de gandareses (bem como centenas de milhares de concidadãos portugueses), compartilharam comigo uma viagem no tempo de regresso ao passado, até há muitas décadas atrás, com a duração de alguns dias.
Muitas áreas geográficas ficaram temporariamente privadas de electricidade e de abastecimento de água, bem como de comunicações fixas e móveis (sem sinal de linha ou de rede). As nossas paisagens estão repletas de milhares de árvores caídas! Felizmente não há notícias de mortes a lamentar, embora tenham existido alguns feridos.
Estes dias, sem muitos dos confortos e dos entretenimentos modernos, foram bastante propícios para meditações pessoais. Pensamos em como era a vida quotidiana no tempo dos nossos avós. Pensamos nas condições de vida madrasta de muitos daqueles que, devido à crise e à pobreza crescente, se vêem privados dos confortos modernos, que as sociedades desenvolvidas há muitas décadas encaram como normais ou básicos, e já não como luxos.
Publico algumas imagens do fim de um objecto que terá sido muito útil para muitos, na semana passada. As fotografias foram tiradas no início do dia 21/01/2013 (uma Segunda-Feira).
The End of a Candle!
Exactly a week ago (in the early morning of one Saturday), the Region of Gândara was facing, what was probably the worst storm of our recent history, with unusually strong winds. Due to the extensive damages caused by this storm, many thousands of portuguese people, shared with me a time travel of a few days, back to the past, to the societal context of many decades ago. Many geographic areas were temporarily deprived of electricity, water supply, telephones, mobile phones (without network), internet, ATMs...
There are thousands of fallen trees in our lanscapes. Fortunately, no one died in the region because of the storm (although there were a few wounded).
Those few days, without many of the modern comforts (and modern entertainments), were good to personal meditations. To think how was the daily life, many decades ago, when our grandfathers were young. To remember those who, due to the severe crisis and growing poverty, are deprived of the modern comforts (homes, electricity, water supply, communications...), that nowadays, in our developed societies, are considered as normal or basic, not as luxuries.
I present some pictures of a candle, an object who has been very useful to thousands of people, during the last week. These photographs were taken at the beginning of the day 21/01/2013 (one Monday).
